Health care ethics (‘clinical ethics’)
We conduct research on ethical questions in health care on the basis of Principle-Based Medical Ethics. One focus of this research is the formulation, evaluation and implementation of normative-ethical requirements for medical decision-making.
Treatment decisions usually require conversations between physicians and patients (or their loved ones including their next of kin). In recent years, the model of shared decision making (SDM) has attracted attention. The implementation of SDM requires structural changes at the macro, meso and micro levels of care. We conduct research on the practice of SDM, reflect and formulate demands on its application in specific treatment contexts, and develop tools to inform and promote its implementation.
